Why we created Child Grief Support Education

When I was working in a hospice with children who had terminal illnesses, the systems or networks set up to support the families of these children through grief after their loss were limited to in the hospice. I realised that they desperately needed more support when they were back home, re-establishing their lives within the community.

When our staff tried to help, they often didn’t have the emotional capacity or training to ensure their goodwill and energy was as effective as possible. If they managed to do a fantastic job helping one family, they found the process emotionally draining. It was challenging to maintain these standards.

We realised that our staff needed solid training to find an emotional balance that equipped them to deal with the intense demands of support that these families needed after their losses.

So I created this training to help all who work with children feel prepared to support them and their families through such difficult times. As a result, our staff felt more emotionally resilient. It empowered them to accompany the children and families through their grief and loss more effectively. They were also able to help more families over the long run whilst maintaining their enthusiasm.

Families we help in this way are amazed and grateful that their children can re-establish the other parts of their developmental path that were interrupted during the loss. The parents also gain more capacity to understand the state of mind and needs of their children.

The families and parents are more likely to ask for and engage in further consultation to support a fuller recovery. Generally, this training positively impacted all the people involved in these journeys through grief so immensely that I felt compelled to bring the value of this process to a broader public audience.
